Jörmungandr was the son of Loki and the brother of Fenrir. People called him the Midgard Serpent, whose body encircled the whole Midgard with his tail in his mouth. The appearance of Jörmungandr was supposed to be the combination of both dragon and serpent.
The name Valknut is not a traditional Viking name but a modern Norwegian title given to the symbol. It combines the words for a slain warrior, "valr," and knot "knut" to mean knot of slain warriors.
